U.S. congressional testimony of Homeland whistleblower postponed until next week

WASHINGTON, Sept 24 (Reuters) – A U.S. House of Representatives committee has postponed the deposition of a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) whistleblower, saying the department had dragged its feet to help the official prepare for his testimony.

In a statement released late on Thursday, Democratic intelligence committee chair Adam Schiff said the panel would reschedule the deposition of former DHS intelligence chief Brian Murphy until next week because DHS has delayed security clearances for his lawyers and barred Murphy from reviewing classified materials.

After DHS removed Murphy as its acting intelligence chief earlier this summer, he filed a whistleblower complaint claiming that top department officials had pressured him to stop providing assessments of the threat of Russian ...

WHO calls for consistent message on virusOn Wednesday, Trump predicted this could happen next month and that a mass vaccination campaign in the U.S. could start shortly afterward. (AP)

The emergencies chief of the World Health Organization says scientific disagreements over COVID-19 interventions like masks and vaccines shouldn’t be treated as some kind of political football, but acknowledged that it isn’t easy for everyone to be on message all the time.

Asked to respond to the open disagreements between U.S. President Donald Trump and the director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention over the effectiveness of masks and when a coronavirus vaccine might be available, Dr...

Louisville anti-racism protests resume amid tensions over Breonna Taylor ruling

As a curfew went into effect after dark and police declared an unlawful assembly, a group of 200 to 300 protesters who had marched through the city for hours retreated to the grounds of the First Unitarian Church, set aside by organizers as a sanctuary near the Ohio River waterfront.

Some of the marchers had smashed windows of several local businesses, and even a hospital, along the way, according to a Reuters journalist. But the scene outside the church contrasted sharply with violence that flared the previous night in Kentucky’s largest city.

After losing a two-year legal battle with a small greeting card company, anonymous UK-based street artist Banksy has been stripped of a trademark for one of his most famous artworks. An EU panel ruled against the artist stating that he could not be considered the owner of an artwork when his identity is still a mystery, the Guardian reported.

The artwork, titled ‘Rage, the Flower Thrower’, first appeared on a wall in Jerusalem in 2005 and shows a masked man, dr...

John Shipley: The Twins won’t do it, but let us talk about the Yankees

“Nobody’s really talked about it yet, so I don’t think I can answer that one,” Rogers said.

But let us talk about the Yankees.

The Twins have gone 15-6 in the month of September and are winners of four straight heading into their final regular-season series against the Cincinnati Reds starting Friday at Target Field. A half-game up on Chicago in the American League Central, the Twins will accomplish all goals if they win out: defend division title, clinch home-field advantage and, maybe, avoid the Yankees.

Who knows how the Twins feel about facing the team that has knocked them out of five of their past six postseason appearances? If they’re even thinking about it, they won’t tell us until they have to, and if they win their next three games, they might never have to.

President Donald Trump took a swipe at the Duchess of Sussex on Wednesday after the former Meghan Markle and Prince Harry participated in a Time 100 video urging Americans to vote.

Meghan, an American, says in the video that every four years elections are referred to as the most important election of our lifetime. “But this one is,” she stressed. “When we vote, our values are put into action and our voices are heard.”

Harry called on Americans to “reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity.” Neither mentioned Trump or his Democratic challenger, Joe Biden, by name, but some have interpreted their comments as critical of Trump.

Port: After urging from lawmakers, Burgum expected to rescind order making failure to quarantine a crime

Today, Sept. 24, lawmakers are saying that order has been rescinded.

In an email sent to his caucus this afternoon, which I obtained, House Minority Leader Chet Pollert, R-Carrington, said that after discussions with Lt. Gov. Brent Sanford, Burgum would be backing away from the order.

Senate Majority Leader Rich Wardner sent a similar message to his caucus:

So far, the governor’s office isn’t commenting on this.

“I wouldn’t have anything to report until the news has been announced,” Burgum spokesman Mike Nowatzki told me.

There doesn’t appear to have been a lot of communication with local leaders before Burgum issued the order.

“Besides his briefing, we have not been contacted saying that it is our responsibility to enforce anything,” ...

President Donald Trump on Wednesday wouldn’t commit to a peaceful transfer of power if a tally of ballots shows Democrat Joe Biden wins the November election.
“We’re going to have to see what happens,” Trump said in response to a reporter’s question at a White House news conference on Wednesday evening. “You know that I’ve been complaining very strongly about the ballots, and the ballots are a disaster.”

Trump has been criticizing the legitimacy of mail-in voting, which is being offered in a number of states as officials seek to limit the spread of the coronavirus at packed polling places.

The president has repeatedly claimed without evidence that mail-in voting is more susceptibl...
